Ariane 5 launches the world’s biggest commercial satellite

On Thursday, August 11, an Ariane 5 launcher placed Thaicom-4 (iPSTAR-1), the world’s largest commercial satellite, into geostationary transfer orbit. Arianespace Flight 166 lifted off from the Guiana Space Center, Europe’s Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana, at 5:20 am local time (8:20 GMT). Two SAFRAN companies, Snecma and Europropulsion, played major roles in this success, as suppliers of the European launcher’s main propulsion systems. | Read more
